Thursday Night Live!

7:30 p.m.
Admission is Free!

Come early, you wouldn’t want to miss out on this night at the MacKenzie!

Projections
Thursday Night Live! program is put on in partnership with the Saskatchewan Cultural Exchange Society, the Saskatchewan Filmpool Co-operative and the Interactive Media and Performance Labs in the Fine Arts Department at the University of Regina. Projections Thursday Night Live! will feature live performances by local bands Rah Rah and Library Voices and Saskatoon band We Were Lovers, and an interactive presentation by participants from the IMP Labs, free snacks and a cash bar.

As an exciting addition to this month’s Thursday Night Live! program, filmmaker Berny Hi from the Saskatchewan Filmpool Co-operative will be on site (with a collection of cameras) to lead visitors in photo-making using various techniques and styles. Visitors can come and conduct their own photo shoots of themselves and their friends with various types of cameras – for free – while enjoying the music of one of their favorite local bands. Visitors will be encouraged to come out with their favourite outfits and accessories and be ready to jump into the Filmpool’s Projections photo studio!

Thursday Night Live! will also feature a limited-edition series of Rah Rah and MacKenzie pins.

Berny Hi graduated from York University with a degree in Film in 2004 and has spent the last few years creating local independent film and delving into still photography. He has worked with a range of cameras: from old crank-wind to the more modern digital quick-shot style. His favorite camera is a trusty Pentax that dates back to the late 70s.

Rah Rah: Since making their out-of-town debut at Pop! Montreal in 2006, the buzz surrounding Rah Rah has been growing steadily. They were voted “Best Band in Regina” by a 2007 prairie dog Reader’s Poll and have since returned to Montreal to play the Pop! Festival again. Since coming off their winter tour of Western Canada, Rah Rah has been hard at work putting together their first full-length album Going Steady, which is now available in stores across Canada and on itunes through Young Soul Records. They played to a capacity crowd at Toronto’s NXNE this June and continued performing throughout the summer with a slot at the Regina Folk Festival and other western tour dates. A February tour is in the works. Rah Rah thanks SaskMusic for their support.

“Last night’s gig” Rah Rah Amanda Putz review on cbc blog (from boxing day show, Dec. 2008):

Library Voices is a ten piece pop collective from Regina, Saskatchewan. Blending tremolo soaked guitars with analog synths, vintage organs, circuit bent electronics, accordion, saxophone, and glockenspiel, their songs play out like an AM radio jingle; mixing the best of the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, and today.

The group debut ep, Hunting Ghosts (& Other Collected Shorts) has garnered much critic praise, including features in Chart Magazine, Spin Magazine, The Calgary Herald, and City News (Toronto). As well the band has been featured on Myspace and has an upcoming feature on Yahoo! Music. The EP spent nearly 3 months on CBC Radio 3 charts, peaking at number 3 and has charted nationally at #21 on Canadian Campus Radio.

They have participated in several high profile festivals and showcases including Sled Island (Mogwai, Of Montreal, Okkervil River), Regina Folk Festival (Broken Social Scene, The Weakerthans, Final Fantasy), Western Canadian Music Awards, Gateway Festival (Greg Keelor), and Ness Creek Festival. The band has also shared the stage with the likes of Stars, Chad VanGaalen, and Plants & Animals.

In early 2009 they will release a full length follow up album entitled Museum of Natural History & Make Believe.

We Were Lovers is a  five-piece, indie / pop /rock band with dreamy & dancey elements. They have been getting their name out in the music scene and in less than two months since their new band members transition, had a few really positive opportunities come about!

One of their songs 'Birds of a Feather' off our EP The Breakup (available on iTunes) was selected to be in issue #155 (November) of the New York based CMJ New Music Mag compilation CD, accompanied by a feature article in the magazine!
They also showcased at the 2008 Western Canadian Music Awards which was a great stepping stone in introducing our band to great people in the industry. Their showcase went really well which resulted in an invitation to showcase at SXSW 2009 in Austin, TX as well as talks re:
showcasing in the UK.
Since then, they have been writing a ton of new music and are really excited about the musical progression since their EP (the songs on their Myspace). They will also be recording demos of their new songs in the next few weeks which they will use to promote theirEastern Canadian tour in early March to precede the trip down to SXSW.
