An Arctic Gathering Selections from the Williamson Collection of Inuit Sculpture recently donated to the MacKenzie Art Gallery

September 3, 2005 to November 27, 2005

Organized by the MacKenzie Art Gallery with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, Saskatchewan Arts Board, and City of Regina Arts Commission.

The 65 works on display were chosen from 85 recently donated to the MacKenzie Art Gallery by Dr. Robert Williamson.  Although works were acquired during his travels throughout the Canadian arctic spanning the period from the mid-1950's to the 1970's, Williamson spent most of his time in Rankin Inlet.  It was here where the interchange between artist and collector was most active.  Owing to his sensitivity, appreciation of their efforts and fluency in their language, the artists regularly sought out Williamson to share and discuss their work.  As evidenced by the number of works acquired, this special relationship was most evident in the case of John Tiktak and John Kavik.  It also existed for Eli Tikeayak, Eugenie Kabluitok, Tuna Iquliq and George Arluk, among others.  Their sculpture, like that of much from the Keewatin region, features reductive tendencies which favour simple and pure form.
