Lasting Impressions is organized and circulated by the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Ontario. The AGH gratefully acknowledges the support of the Museums Assistance Program, Scotia Private Client Group, ScotiaMcLeod Heritage and Pacific Arts Services.

The Art Gallery of Hamilton boasts a permanent collection that is one of the strongest in the country, housing some of the most significant and engaging artworks ever created by Canadians. These masterpieces include Charles Comfort’s The Dreamer, Horatio Walker’s Ave Maria and Tom Thomson’s The Birch Grove, among many others. The exhibition, Lasting Impressions: Celebrated Works from the Art Gallery of Hamilton, presents the very best of the Gallery’s holdings of Canadian historical art — suitably bracketed by two powerhouses, William Blair Bruce’s Phantom of the Snow and Alex Colville’s Horse and Train.

While providing an impressive group of works that reflect the very core of the Canadian collection, the exhibition also offers sideways glances at America, British and French art. Deftly tracing the evolution of modernism in Canada, the works in the exhibition speak eloquently of the various artistic movements that defined Canadian art over a period of several decades.
