Dimensions - Growth 2008
May 10 to August 17, 2008 Dimensions award ceremony and opening reception on Friday, June 13, 2008 beginning at 7 p.m. For more information on the awards, please contact the Saskatchewan Craft Council by calling (306) 653-3616. Jurying for the Saskatchewan Craft Council’s (SCC) Dimensions – Growth 2008 exhibition took place from April 2 to 5. Approximately 150 pieces of Craft were entered into the province’s most prestigious Fine Craft exhibition. Thirty-five were selected for the touring show. This is the most exciting part of the year for us – better than Christmas – seeing all the amazing work that Saskatchewan craftspeople make by hand. The SCC Gallery was full to the rafters with creativity, innovation and beauty. The pieces were judged by internationally respected wood carver, Jamie Russell, from Vanscoy, and Dr. Sandra Alfoldy, professor of craft history at NSCAD University in Halifax. They had two days to examine the pieces and selected 35 to be in this exhibition. They also selected winners of 17 awards for excellence in various aspects of Fine Craft. Prior to the jurying session, the jurors spoke at the Mendel Auditorium on Wednesday, April 2. Jamie Russell showed his wonderful wood carvings. Dr. Sandra Alfoldy spoke on “Materiality and Meaning in the Crafts.” After selecting the pieces for Dimensions — Growth, the jurors presented a public critique where they shared their thoughts and impressions of the entries. Receiving constructive criticism is the most valuable educational part of entering work for Dimensions. Craftspeople entering the show can receive expert feedback. It is also a great opportunity for interested members of the public to learn more about Craft.
